Archival Library

As an essential part of research oriented organisation, the Archives has a large library consisting of about 13,000 volumes. The library is divided into two sections: One section being linked with the books and the other Section holds the old files of newspapers. There are 55 newspaper files in all, out of which the Headquarter library has retained the newspaper files of five major dailies, while rest of the newspaper files are preserved at the Repositories of this Department.


The books in the Headquarters library are arranged subject viz in an Open Access System. The large chunk of the collection of the library is devoted to the Punjab Administrative Reports (1864-1935), Reports of various government departments, Census reports, Gazetteers of undivided Punjab (1883-84), Reprint Gazetteers from the Research Society of Pakistan, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Copies of Journals published by the International Council on Archives (ICA), Journals and Proceedings of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, Rare books on Ancient, Medieval and Modern History of India, Published maps in book form, Builders of Modern India,

Published speeches of national leaders, monographs, Dictionaries, almanacs, Glossaries, Biographies, Autobiographies, Publications of National Archives of India (NAI), Treaties, Engagements and sanads. Besides, a rich collection on the History of Haryana supplemented by CDs containing latest data acquired from the Census Department Haryana.

The Library is visited by the large number of research scholars/ university fellows, authors, judges, lawyers, IAS/ IPS Officers, Media men etc. Many foreign scholars have also utilised this Library. Microfilming and Reprographic services and Xerox facilities are rendered on payment basis.
